Each aid is a story<\/h1>\n

Each person has a path, a place, a presence, many have shared this disaster, which, adding to the already difficult Lebanese situation, has led to a series of difficulties and needs.
With our small initiative we decided to intervene on a specific theme, doors and windows to protect the houses destroyed by the force of the blast wave.
Some have lost their homes, but even those who have had the grace of minor damage are in a condition of necessity and need to protect the family shelter.
Hamid suggested this kind of intervention, after a field analysis, and we immediately began to work in this direction.
Till today we have identified five families that have been promptly supported. For each intervention we will show you the before and after and we will give you hints on the extraordinary story that each family experienced as a consequence to this tragedy. We will keep you updated with the following interventions and stories. Thank you very much for your precious support to the Beirut 2020 initiative.<\/p>\n

The house had a massive destruction as it is situated less than 200 meters from the harbor. The family had already started doing some work on the house with the support of family and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

It belongs to Carmen \u2026.. Her daughter was badly injured and the house had been seriously damaged. Carmen appreciated our initiative and asked us to just assist in getting her a main door.
The main door had been shattered and was temporarily replaced with a piece of wood. We have also contributed in changing the kitchen door which was damaged and has blood stains on it, although it wasn\u2019t urgent but it gave her a shiver every time she looked at it.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Barotta was badly injured by the explosion as she stood in the main door having a chat with her neighbor Victoria who was also injured. They were both admitted at the hospital for a period of over 2 weeks. The house as you will see from the pictures shows the extent of the damage caused. The wall separating the Barotta house from one of the neighbors was completely destroyed as well as part of the main door, many of the interior and balcony doors as well as windows and majority of the furniture. We made most of the major work to get the house back to a habitable condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Victoria Odaymi, the Barotta\u2019s family neighbor who happened to be in the doorway at the time of the explosion survived with severe injuries and is still at the hospital at the moment. She\u2019s an old woman who lives alone and had great damage to her house. Major repairs were made to enable her return to the house upon her discharge from the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kobayyat Street is in one of the areas that were severely affected by the explosion. Mr George had already been assisted and supported by other initiatives similar to ours, with the exception of the kitchen roof which was destroyed by blocks that had fallen from the building next door. He explained that he had saved and gathered some material and was left with only a few to purchase and someone to get the job done for him. And since we were working close to his house we allowed our team to buy the necessary and get the job done <\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Marise is a widow living with her two boys aged 12 and 10. She has lost her husband some few years ago and lives in one room house with very poor conditions. The explosion came to make things worse as the small kitchen lost its roof in addition to some damaged walls and windows.<\/p>\n

Obeid Family<\/strong><\/p>\n

I visited the family on Wednesday 11th November and met the mother Mrs. Rim Obeid, a mother of two. The house had been fixed and the family had been helped by some individuals. What couldn\u2019t be fixed was her two kids Maria (14 yo) who had lost her left eye and Giorgio (13 yo) who has more 60 stiches all over her body. The kids are shocked and morally affected. The mother explained that she would be happy if we could hire a teacher to help the kids with their studies, so we hired a teacher who will attend to the kids at home, 4 hours each every week over a period of 3 months.
I unfortunately have no receipt to support the payment as the teacher doesn\u2019t issue an official receipt for that purpose. However I will be checking up on the family to ensure that the kids are being assisted.<\/p>\n

Residence of Mrs. Rose Aswad<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mrs. Aswad is a mother of 6 who was abandoned by her husband and left with her kids in a house that was severly damaged by the explosion. The husband appears to have some mental illness and takes no responsibility of his family. Mrs. Aswad had to find a place for her family and moved into a small apartment shelter her kids. I met Mrs. Aswad through a friend who had already raised some funds to pay for the rent and we paid the other half to make sure the kids have at least a place to sleep and to ensure that family doesn\u2019t end up in the street.<\/span><\/p>\n

Total rent was 450 USD and we contributed only 200 USD since the balance was already available.<\/p>\n

The operation has general expenses due to funds transfer. The transfer procedure via paypal and from paypal to italian banking account number, are free of charge. For the money transfer to Lebanon we used Western Union channel and we were charged for about a 5% of the amount due to tranfer fee and exchange rate from euros to US dollars.<\/p>\n

Other expenses are are attributable to transport and comunications.<\/p>\n

Part of the money was used differently from the original objective of the campaign- restoration of damaged residences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Urgent interferences were required in other matters:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Hospitalization: contributing with a needy family paying a hospital bill for their newborn<\/span><\/li>\n
  • A retreat house: purchasing diapers for elderly<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Subsidies: subsidizing few families that have no income, with basic foodstuffs (oil, milk, rice, flour, sugar, pasta, canned food).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    You proved with your initiative that the greatness of Humanity lies in simple actions that make all the difference. What we could achieve with the money was far more valuable than their pecuniary value.<\/span><\/p>\n
